Report: Hospice UK - Impact of cost pressures

In April 2019 Hospice UK conducted a UK wide survey of it's members to assess the national picture financially for hospices.  It revealed more than a third of hospices have cancelled or postponed plans to introduce or expand new services; two-thirds are drawing on their reserves and over a third taking steps to reduce back office costs.

Report: Charity Risk Barometer: risk and reward in an uncertain world

From the Third Sector, a report on a panel of leading figures in the charity sector who met to discuss the challenges that charities currently face, and to openly discuss, share and learn from each other.  Insights from this panel shaped a survey which was then sent on to 200 senior leaders in the sector.  The report presents the survey findings and explores some of the immediate and emerging risks facing the sector as well as potential solutions.

Guide: The 20 minute guide to being a Hospice Trustee

Updated guide from Hospice UK., primarily aimed at new trustees but those with experience of the trustee role may still find it useful.  It provides answers to the most frequently asked questions, looks at the governance role of hospice boards, describes roles and responsibilities and suggests how to make the experience worthwhile to both a trustee and hospice.

Article: How are charities responding to the apprenticeship levy?

The apprenticeship levy was generally unpopular within the charity sector when it was introduced in April 2017.  This article reviews how the levy is changing the way many charities and recruiting and developing their workforce.

Guidance: Trustee charity finance competency

This survey carried out in October 2018 looked at the confidence and competence of charity trustees with regard to financial competency and commitment.  It followed a previous survey carried out in 2017.  The findings showed there had been a marginal improvement in the financial skills and knowledge of trustees with 61% stating they were able to fulfil their financial responsibilities "well" or "very well".   The survey makes a number of recommendations including training and assessment to support this role of trustees and highlights key resources.

Guidance: A new approach to supporting community healthcare funding testing and guidance

Published by NHS England and NHS Improvement, the document sets out the process for testing the new draft currencies developed as part of the Community Currency Development Project.   It includes information on children with complex needs/disabilities, and those who will be transitioning to adult services.  May 2019.
